Why should young people in Nigeria be
interested in MGCY:Today over 33 percent of Nigeria population is made of young people facing different challenges that are hindering the achievement of a stable environmental, economic and social well-being for today and tomorrow. If we must make things right this is the time to act.
What is Affected?
Agriculture- Prices of food are increasing, Proper nutrition (or
lack of it) is already a problem in Nigeria, whether due to low
agricultural yields, population growth or poverty.
Health- Many more people are dying of preventable diseases.
Education- The standard of education is
deteriorating, our curriculum cannot confront the challenges that we find in
our society (they are obsolete). Today it should be easier to find a job
because our generation is the most educated but there is an inadequacy between
the training offered and the needs of the labour market.
Infrastructure- Many more people cannot afford
a house, and countless number of people die on our roads everyday.
Jobs- Very high rate of unemployment from rural to urban settlement.
Economy- The value of our currency is falling almost everyday.
What can you do?
§ Write to your local,
state and government authorities,
§ Demand for transparency,
§ Lobby for a youth representative in their delegation to Rio + 20.
§ Tell your friends in school, work, or play groups about sustainable development- It’s all about eliminating poverty and hunger in our world while at the same time preventing pollution and conserving the natural environment.
Work
together with MGCY Co-ordinators
and volunteers to spread the message through a workshop, seminar, text
messages, posters, handbills, media (Radio and Television), involving an
artiste you know, telling your tradional and religious leaders about
sustainable development.
