What is Rio+20
The United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD) will take place in Brazil from 20-22 June 2012 to mark the 20th anniversary of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), in Rio de Janeiro (RIO+20). Heads of States and Governements, as well as other representatives will discuss the issue and write a political document. The objectives of Rio+20 are to achieve a political commitment for sustainable development, to measure the current progress and implementation of actions for sustainable development, and to address new challenges.

What is sustainable development ?
"Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
Brundtland Report
Through sustainable development, the priority should be given to the needs of the poors, to ensure all people can enjoy life on Earth. As the natural ressources of our planet are limited, we need to use them precautionally to fulfill our needs and make sure our children and grandchildren could also enjoy them.

What is the message of Rio+20?
The world is facing significant challenges that can only be tackled by global cooperation. Rio+20 offers a unique opportunity to make a new programmes for sustainable development globally, nationally and locally. Our hope for Rio+20 is that there is significant participation by heads of state in the negotiations to ensure commitments are taken more seriously, and that governments are held accountable for agreements that are not implemented. Finally, we call for the adoption of a UN General Assembly resolution to strengthen the agreements reached at Rio+20

What is the MGCY?
The Major Group for Children and Youths is the representative platform for all youths to participate in the United Nations Commission for Sustainable Development process.

The MGCY is an international network that brings together young people with a desire to build a sustainable world. The role of the MGCY is to ensure and facilitate the participation of children and youth in decisions about sustainable development (environmental protection, social equity, economic soundness) at local, national,  regional, international and UN levels

Why the children and youths ?
Youths play an important role in the civil society for protecting and preserving the planet’s resources. Their involvement in the creation and implementation of the programs is critical to the long-term success. In addition to being highly vulnerable to the effects of environmental degradation, they will be inheriting the task of looking after the Earth. In consequence, their specific interests need to be taken in the participatory process on environment and development in order to safeguard the future sustainability of any actions taken to improve the environment

What are the goals of the MGCY ?
The MGCY, through the actions of its volunteers, aims at mobilising 1 billlion of youths in the world, including 5 million who do not have internet access. The MGCY will also try to reach 50 000 youths through its communations such as newsletters. The MGCY is trying to mobilise youths under one common identity.

Who are we ?
As Outreach Team Leaders and Coordinators, we are volunteers of the Capacity Team Building. Our role is to  facilitate youth engagement toward the UN Conference for Sustainable Development (Rio+20). As members of the MGCY, our concrete role is to deliver the MGCY message about the sustainable development issues to the youths.

Who are our partners ?
In order to achieve an efficient delivery of our message, we need to work in collaboration with different actors such as NGOs, youths associations, and schools. Through collaboration with these institutions, we will be able to reach the youths. As we need tools to deliver our message, working with the medias (e.g radio, tv, newspaper, blogs,..) is an important part of our job. Finally, to attract children and youths’ attention to our actions, we will try to partner with a local artist who could promote our message.
